Description
RailWorks rebuilt and modernized Jamaica Station and constructed the AirTrain Terminal as part of the AirTrain project, a $1.9 billion automated people mover shuttle system to provide ground transportation to, from and around JFK International Airport.

Scope
RailWorks began work on the five-year, $72 million AirTrain project in 2001. RailWorks installed all the lighting, public address, closed-circuit television, electrical service and distribution equipment systems, as well as lightning protection and mechanical systems. Phase I, completed in late-2003, focused on constructing a modern, eight-story AirTrain station giving riders access to a street lobby and portal mezzanine to connect to Long Island Rail Road’s five-platform commuter service. Phase II, completed in late-2006, focused on rebuilding the Long Island Rail Road’s five, 1,000-foot station platforms to accommodate new systems and more riders.

Unique features
A key challenge of the project was updating the landmark Jamaica Station while preserving its historic elements dating back to 1916.
